Nissan Sentra vs the Mazda Competition in Memphis, TN

2021 Nissan Sentra Excels Against the New Mazda3 -- See How at Jim Keras Nissan

There's no putting it lightly: drivers in Memphis love the Nissan Sentra. It's everything one could hope to find in a compact sedan for the weekly Cordova commute or weekend Lakeland road trip -- superb style, proven performance, a firm safety commitment, drive-time comfort, and expert equipment, from amenities to technology. Close and fierce competitors like Mazda3 can say much the same. However, when it comes down to details, it's Sentra that pulls ahead. Check out the matchup for yourself -- you'll see what we mean!

2021 Nissan Sentra vs 2021 Mazda3

Between them, Sentra offers sportier looks, even standing apart from other new Nissan vehicles. Step into a trim like SR Turbo, and you'll find eye-catching elements like 17-inch alloy wheels, extended body side sills, a rear spoiler with bui8lt-in LED brake lights, fog lighting, and a chrome-tipped exhaust. Rise to NISMO to get the motorsport-inspired look. Its exterior front, side, and rear lower body panels put a signature layered, double-wing design with a thin red-stripe accent on prominent display. Mazda3 and its aesthetics, on the other hand, are minimalist and unassuming.

Performance and Capabilities

If you're looking for a small sedan with sports car flair, look no further than Sentra SR Turbo or NISMO. Mazda3, however, offers only a base sedan and a series of available packages, and none speak to performance enhancements.

The turbocharged 188-horsepower, 1.6-liter DIG I4 standard in Sentra SR Turbo and NISMO trims is an eager accelerator, ready to shell out 177 pound-feet. Mazda3 has only one engine, and it's only a 186-horsepower I4.

Sentra gets better fuel economy than Mazda3. Thanks to an Xtronic CVT transmission, by EPA estimates, it can get up to 29 mpg in a city like Southaven, 37 mpg down the highway to Collierville, and 32 mpg combined between Arlington and Memphis, TN. Mazda3 gets only up to 26 mpg, 35 mpg, and 30 mpg, respectively.

Interior and Technologies

Offering up to 95.9 cubic feet of space for passengers and a large 15.1-cubic-foot trunk, Sentra is one of the more spacious compact sedans in the segment for both people and luggage. The Mazda3 cabin measures only up to 92.8 cubic feet, and its trunk is smaller, at 13.2.

Sentra can seat as many as five in cloth, premium cloth, premium sport cloth, or leather-appointed accommodations. There's even an exclusive synthetic suede seat trim standard in NISMO, and it brings with it supportive side bolsters. All seating is available heated in front, and dual-zone auto temperature control is an option to help you get the compartment just the way you like. Mazda3 offers only cloth and leather options -- no sport cloth or suede.

Sentra gets a high TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the IIHS when equipped with auto emergency braking and LED low beams. Plus, it gets our stars from the NHTSA for crash resistance.
